Come take a tour of historic Blacksburg Virginia with a ghostly twist. The University of Virginia Tech is a massive institution that casts a monstrous shadow. Within the shadows, where the past lingers like a whisper, tales of lore and forgotten tragedies have woven into the fabric of Blacksburg. On this 60-minute journey, your guide will reveal the hidden history and eerie legends surrounding: The Alexander Black House, the Lyric Theatre, the mysterious halls of the Thomas Conner House, the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center (GLC), the Blacksburg Municipal Building , and Kent Square.

Tour Start and End Locations

  • Historic Thomas Conner House

    The tour starts off at 104 Draper Rd., otherwise known as the Thomas Conner House. Today this Italianate-Victorian home is owned by the town of Blacksburg and rents out office space. The lore associated with the Thomas Conner House goes back to a very………very stormy night back in October of 1902.

  • Historic Alexander Black House

    The tour ends at 204 Draper Rd., the infamous Alexander Black House. Today, this Queen Anne Victorian home serves as the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation. It began as a home for Alexander Black and his family. After Alexander’s death the home was transformed into a funeral home and served as one for 50 years. It’s safe to say the history here is rich in life and death.

Locations visited on Tour

  • Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center (GLC)

    Built in 1935, it served as a hotel until when it was repurposed into the Graduate Life Center in 2005. This tour stop will have you losing your head over the spectral figure seen here on a regular basis.

  • Lyric Theater

    The historic Lyric Thearter was built in 1930, and played an important role in the cultural life of Blacksburg for nearly a century. Through the theaters life it has seen ups and two people fall down to their death. During this tour stop we will learn about the 6 spectral figures known to call the Lyric home.

  • Kent Square

    Kent Square was originally built in the late 19th century. During its life, the square has seen times of prosperity and times of despair and depression. Today it is a site of modern engineering. Its early years hold tales of losses and what could have been.

  • Blacksburg Municipal Building (Blacksburg’s first indoor gymnasium)

    The Blacksburg Municipal Building was built in 1931. Originally it was built to be the first indoor gymnasium in Blacksburg, serving as a central hub for community events, sports, and local gatherings. The echos of its past - both physical and spectral - still resonate within its walls today.

The tour guide reserves the right to cancel a scheduled tour at any time. Typically a minimum number of 4 guests (total, not per party) is required to perform a tour.

Maximum of 15 guests per tour (if more is needed please ask about a private tour.)
